When and where to plant
When: Plant bulbs in early to mid-autumn.
Where: Full sun in moist but well-drained or well-drained soil. Good for borders, rock gardens, gravel gardens and containers.
What kind of plant is it?
Hardy bulbous perennial – survives winter, dies back after flowering and re-emerges from the bulb. It can spread into attractive clumps.
Size and flowering
Expected size: Typically around 20–25cm tall with a clumping spread; usually establishes in about 1–2 years.
Flowering time: Late spring to early summer, often May to June.
Care
Avoid waterlogged ground and very freshly manured soil. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
What makes it special?
Clusters of bright yellow, upward-facing star-shaped flowers. A low-growing allium that is particularly useful towards the front of borders and is attractive to pollinators.
Bulbs made easy
If you can dig a small hole, you can grow alliums. Plant these hardy perennial bulbs once in a sunny, well-drained spot and they can return and increase for years.
